The Columbus Crew will be keeping the Trillium Cup at Hunt Park until next season after a 2-1 win over Toronto FC on Wednesday night.
Eddie Gaven opened the scoring in only the 4th minute. Federico Higuain cut inside from the left wing and found Gaven near the top of the box. Gaven’s right-footed shot took a deflection, sending Toronto’s goalie the wrong way as the ball went the other direction and into the net.
The Crew doubled their lead 58th minute. Jairo Arrieta got on a loose ball in the box, turned, and found Higuain, who deftly shot the ball into the top of the net.
A late onslaught from Toronto almost ended the night badly for Columbus. Luis Silva pulled a goal back in the 71st minute after making a nice run through the center of the Crew’s defense, receiving a great through ball, and passing the ball past Andy Gruenebaum and into the goal. However, Toronto weren’t able to score a second, securing three points and the Trillium Cup for Columbus.
