Columbus v. Stoke City (Recap and Pictures)

Only 8,976 fans were present at Crew Stadium on Tuesday night, but they all witnessed a great game and storyline as English Premier League side Stoke City were in town for a preseason friendly match against the Columbus Crew.

Stoke showed their class early, going up in 23rd minute after a Jonathan Walters header beat Crew goalie Andy Gruenebaum at his near post.

However, two Ohio natives and Crew homegrown players gave Columbus a 2-1 win after a valiant second-half comeback.  Emilio Renteria’s cross to Aaron Horton leveled the game in the 71st minute.  The match looked like it would end in a draw, but Ben Speas came through in the 87th minute with a blast that rifled past Stoke’s goalie and into the top corner of the net.

Who knew a couple of young Ohioans could beat an EPL team?
