The Columbus Crew signed their second player in as many days today, picking up Costa Rican forward Olman Vargas. Vargas most recently played for C.S. Herediano of the Costa Rican first division, scoring 17 goals over the course of the past two seasons. The 26 year old is a big, physical presence in the box. Most of his goal highlights are headers from crosses served into the penalty area. Vargas and Emilio Renteria should be a very powerful combo up top, and will put great fear into every MLS defense.
Ben Speas has now been officially offered a Homegrown contract, and the Crew are waiting for a response.
The Designated Player search is still ongoing. Coach Warzycha seems dead set on picking up a big-name player this season, whether it’s before the first game or during the summer.
Jamaican left-back Lance Laing has been called in to train with Columbus during the preseason. Laing played for the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers in the NASL last season, earning best XI honors.
Former Crew midfielder Kevin Burns is going on trial at FC Hjorring of Denmark. Burns’ contract wasn’t picked up at the end of the 2011 season.
