Columbus Crew Offseason (Marshall Staying, Rogers Possibly Leaving)

The soccer offseason is often referred to as the silly season due to the numerous rumors surrounding the sport that usually end up being completely false.  This past week, the Crew have been a part of an offseason rumor, while also locking up their best defender to a multi-year contract.

Reports from England have released that Crew midfielder Robbie Rogers is close to signing with Leeds United from the Championship, the second-highest division of soccer in England.

However, Robbie himself has Tweeted that he hasn’t signed for anyone yet.  Rogers’ agent has recently said that Blackburn Rovers of the Premier League have also expressed interest.  In any case, don’t expect the winger to be back in Columbus next season.  Even though he was incredibly frustrating during his tenure with the Crew, I wish Robbie all the best wherever he ends up, and I thank him for the great 2008 season.  I hope he is able to find some new friends across the pond.

While Rogers is most likely on his way out, captain Chad Marshall will be sticking around the capital city for a while.  The two-time MLS Defender of the Year signed a multi-year contract this week, keeping him with the Crew through 2015.  It’s always a good thing when you lock down your best defender for multiple years.  I hope Chad stays in Columbus for the rest of his career and becomes a Crew-lifer.  It seems the Crew front office was finally able to make an easy decision simple and not complicate things to no end.
