The Columbus Crew fell to the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night in front of 14,503 fans at the Dick, 2-0. The Crew remain on 34 points (9-7-7) this season, while the Rapids improve to 9-6-10 (37 points).
Eddie Gaven picked up an injury in the third minute after Jeff Larentowicz’s follow through on a shot caught Gaven. He was subbed off in the seventh minute for Crew rookie Bernardo Anor.
Both teams had few chances in the first half, with the best one coming in the 18th minute for Columbus after Robbie Rogers’ cross just missed Andres Mendoza’s foot. However, both teams went into the break without any goals.
The first goal of the game came in the 54th minute for Colorado. Midfielder Brian Mullen picked up the ball about 30 yards from goal. He took a touch towards goal, and unleashed a rocket of a shot that went straight into the upper 90 of the goal.
Colorado doubled the lead in the 79th minute. A back pass from Eric Gehrig to Emmanuel Ekpo was intercepted by Sanna Nyassi. He dribbled towards goal, and passed to Omar Cummings on the right side of the box. Cummings ran on to it, and finished nicely past Hesmer with a first time shot into the far corner.
Goalie William Hesmer and forward Andres Mendoza both made their first appearances after missing the past two MLS games, as well as the Newcastle friendly.
The Crew play next Saturday against the New England Revolution at home. The Rapids travel to San Jose to play the Earthquakes on Saturday as well.
