Columbus v. Colorado Preview (August 5th, 2011)

The Columbus Crew take on the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Wednesday night (9:30 pm).  When the two teams met earlier in the season at Crew Stadium, Columbus came away 4-1 victors in the infamous Upperdecke game.

The Crew are currently in first place in the Eastern Conference, with a record of 9-6-7 (34 points). The Rapids are 8-6-10 (34 points), and are in fourth place in the West.

Columbus is coming off a 2-0 victory away from home against Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Colorado beat the Union in Philadelphia on Friday, 2-1.

In other Crew news, goalie Andy Gruenebaum was awarded the MLS Save of the Week for his diving left handed save in last week’s game against Salt Lake.  Gruenebaum has filled in for the injured William Hesmer the past two games, recording two shutouts.  However, Hesmer is healthy again, and Robert Warzycha’s choice in goal for tonight is still up in the air.

Prediction: Crew 2-0 Rapids

After winning 2-0 in Salt Lake (and their first ever victory at Rio Tinto Stadium), the Crew will win in another historically hard place to pick up three points on the road.  Forward Andres Mendoza should be able to play some minutes tonight, and hopefully Robbie Rogers can continue his good play that won him Team of the Week honors for his two assists against Salt Lake.  Columbus’ stout defense will record another shutout.

Injury report:

Columbus Crew – OUT: DF Shaun Francis; MF Dilly Duka; MF Tony Tchani; GK Alex Riggs; FW Jeff Cunningham; DOUBTFUL: MF Rich Balchan; FW Emilio Renteria; QUESTIONABLE: DF Josh Williams; PROBABLE: FW Andres Mendoza; GK William Hesmer
