Columbus v. Newcastle Preview (July 26th, 2011)

The Columbus Crew play Newcastle United from the English Premier League in a friendly match on Tuesday night (7:30 pm) at Crew Stadium.  Newcastle is currently on a preseason tour in the United States.  They have already played Sporting Kansas City, tying 0-0, and Orlando City of the USL Pro division, losing 1-0.

Newcastle finished 12th in the top flight of England last year.  They are one of the most supported clubs in England.  They play at St James’ Park, a 53,000 capacity stadium.

An open training session was held at Crew Stadium this morning for fans wanting to watch the Magpies train.

Newcastle played a friendly match against the Crew on July 26th, 2000, at Crew Stadium in front of 18,212 fans.  The game ended 2-2, with current Crew player Jeff Cunningham and Miles Joseph scoring for Columbus.

After the game, the Toon Army will head back to Newcastle upon Tyne to resume their training for their opening EPL game against Arsenal on August 13th.
