Columbus v. Portland Preview (July 23rd, 2011)

The Columbus Crew play host to the Portland Timbers Saturday night (8:00) for the first time ever at Crew Stadium.  The Crew are coming off a 1-0 loss in Los Angeles on Wednesday against the Galaxy.  They are 7-6-7 (28 points) on the season.  The Timbers won last Saturday on the road against the Chicago Fire, 1-0.  It was their first win in seven games.  Portland is 6-9-3 (21 points) this year.

The two teams played earlier this season at Jeld-Wen Field in Portland on May 21st.  The Timbers came away 1-0 victors after former Crew defender Eric Brunner scored against his former team in the 46th minute.

Former Crew midfielder Adam Moffat was traded by Portland this week to the Houston Dynamo.

Emilio Renteria is expected to get some minutes for the first time since the game at Portland in May.  Newest Crew member Tony Tchani should be ready to play next week, but not tomorrow.

Prediction: Crew 1-0 Timbers

The Crew are struggling on offense (two goals in the past five games), but their defense has been pretty steady as of late.  William Hesmer is playing some of the best soccer of his career.  A goal will come for Columbus in some fashion Saturday night, but by who I do not know.

Injury report:

Columbus Crew – OUT: DF Josh Williams; MF Dilly Duka; DOUBTFUL: MF Tony Tchani; MF Rich Balchan); FW Andres Mendoza; QUESTIONABLE: GK William Hesmer; FW Emilio Renteria; DF Shaun Francis

Portland Timbers – OUT: DF Kevin Goldthwaite; FW Spencer Thompson; PROBABLE: FW Bright Dike; DF Jeremy Hall; GK Troy Perkins; DF Rodney Wallace

Be Massive.
