League Leaders Down Columbus, 1-0

The Columbus Crew lost Saturday night in Los Angeles to the Galaxy, 1-0, in front of 24,709 fans at the Home Depot Center.  Sean Franklin scored the only goal of the game in the 70th minute.  With the win, the Galaxy extend their lead on the rest of the league, moving to 11-2-9 (42 points).  They increase their undefeated streak in MLS play to 13 games.  The Crew drop to 7-6-7 (28 points).

In the fourth minute, the Crew had to use their first sub of the game.  Forward Andres Mendoza appeared to pick up a hamstring injury.  Tommy Heinemann was subbed on for the Designated Player.

In the 68th minute, Crew defender Julius James fouled David Beckham near the center of the field.  Beckham’s ensuing free kick didn’t make it past the wall, but the ball bounced right out to Sean Franklin.  Franklin hit the ball with a first time shot that was deflected by Eric Gehrig on its way into the net.  The goal was Franklin’s first ever MLS goal.

David Beckham picked up a yellow card in stoppage time for delaying the game.  He will now miss the Galaxy’s next MLS game in Vancouver due to yellow card accumulation.  Beckham also took 14 corner kicks for Los Angeles, the most a single opponent has ever taken in one game against Columbus.

Crew goalie William Hesmer had another fantastic game, making many saves to keep Columbus in the game.  However, the Crew’s stagnant offense (only one goal in the past four games) wasn’t able to take advantage of their goalie’s great play.

The Crew will play next this Saturday at home against the Portland Timbers.  The Galaxy play Manchester City in a friendly match at home on Sunday afternoon.

Yes we do. Since Robbie Rogers came back from the U.S. Gold Cup team, the Crew have only scored two goals in the past five games.

  2. man we really need to start attacking more
