Columbus v. San Jose Preview (July 16th, 2011)

The Columbus Crew play the San Jose Earthquakes at Crew Stadium Saturday night (7:30 pm).  The Crew are 7-5-6 (27 points) on the season, and the Earthquakes are 5-6-7 (22 points).  The Earthquakes thrashed Columbus earlier this year in San Jose, 3-0.

The Crew are coming off a 1-0 win at Vancouver last Wednesday.  They have won three of their last four games.  San Jose recently played the Philadelphia Union at home last Saturday, tying 0-0.  The Earthquakes also played a friendly against West Bromwich Albion this Tuesday, winning 2-1.  San Jose is winless in their last five MLS games.

Prediction: Crew 2-0 Earthquakes

The Crew are coming off a very emotional game where they scored at the death to win the game.  They will ride that momentum to another victory against San Jose.  The team has had ten days off, so they will be well rested.  Columbus will also want to step its game up for all the legends that will be at Hunt Park.  Defender Chad Marshall will shut down Earthquakes forward Steven Lenhart, and William Hesmer will get his seventh shutout of the season.

Injury report:

Columbus Crew  – OUT: DF Josh Williams; MF Dilly Duka; DOUBTFUL: DF Shaun Francis; MF Rich Balchan; FW Emilio Renteria

San Jose Earthquakes – OUT: MF Bobby Convey; MF Andre Luiz; DF Ike Opara; DOUBTFUL: DF Steven Beitashour

Brian McBride will be honored at halftime on Saturday.  McBride scored 62 goals for the Crew during his time in Columbus, second all-time only to Jeff Cunningham.  McBride was the Crew’s number one draft pick in the 1996 MLS Inaugural Player Draft and stayed with Columbus until 2004, when he left to play for Fulham in the English Premier League.  Upon returning back to MLS in 2008, McBride wanted to play for his hometown Chicago Fire.  He retired after last season.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Gino Padula will also be at the game.  Both are in town running the Schelotto Padula Soccer Academy.

Former Crew players Steven Lenhart and Jon Busch will be playing for San Jose.  All of these former players returning to Crew Stadium will be making up a Crew reunion of some sorts.
