Columbus v. Colorado Preview (June 26th, 2011)

The Columbus Crew host the Colorado Rapids tonight at Crew Stadium (8:00 pm).  The Crew are 5-4-6 on the season (21 points).  Colorado is 5-4-7 (22 points).

The Crew defeated the Houston Dynamo last Saturday, 2-0.  The Rapids lost at home last Saturday against the Los Angeles Galaxy, 3-1.  They were on a 9 game unbeaten streak.

Last year, the two teams met in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.  The Rapids won the first leg at home, 1-0.  The Crew won the return leg, 2-1.  In the penalty kick shootout, former Crew midfielder Brian Carroll skied his shot over the crossbar in what ended up being his last kick as a Crew player.  The Rapids moved on, and eventually won the MLS Cup over FC Dallas, 2-1.

Crew midfielder Robbie Rogers returned to the team today after his stay with the USA for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.  Rogers never saw the field during the tournament.  He won’t be available tonight.

The Crew are coming off of their first away win of the season, but Columbus is yet to win back to back games this season.  The Rapids haven’t won in Crew stadium since 2004.

Crew forward Emilio Renteria had returned to full practice earlier this week. However, he reaggravated his injury during Thursday’s practice, and he will be unavailable for tonight’s game.

Prediction: Crew 2-1 Rapids

The Crew will be looking to stop their inconsistent play of this year and finally pick up back to back victories.  They will get their revenge for last year’s playoffs.  Andres Mendoza will continue his hot streak of making fans angry and scoring goals.  He will score, and Emmanuel Ekpo will score his second of the season.  Rapids forwards Connor Casey and Omar Cummings will combine for one goal.

Injury report:

Columbus Crew– OUT: MF Danny O’Rourke; DF Josh Williams; MF Leandre Griffit; MF Dilly Duka; DF Shaun Francis; DOUBTFUL: FW Emilio Renteria; QUESTIONABLE: DF Julius James

Colorado Rapids – DOUBTFUL: FW Macoumba Kandji; PROBABLE: DF Marvell Wynne; GK Matt Pickens; MF Joseph Nane; FW Omar Cummings

Be Massive.
