Columbus Crew v. Real Salt Lake, Preview (June 8th, 2011)

The Columbus Crew play Real Salt Lake Wednesday night at Crew Stadium (7:30 pm).  The two teams faced off before the MLS season started this year in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.  Salt Lake won the home-and-home series on an aggregate score of 4-1.  Columbus is 3-3-6 (15 points) this year.  Salt Lake is 6-2-2 (20 points).

Columbus tied New York in Red Bull Arena Saturday night, 1-1.  Salt Lake also played on Saturday, defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 at home.

The Crew haven’t won since April 30 and are 0-2-3 in their last five games.  They went winless in the month of May.  Columbus has only scored 12 goals this season, while Salt Lake has only allowed 4 goals, the fewest in the league.

Salt Lake has knocked the Crew out of two competitions in the past two years.  In the 2009 Eastern Conference Semifinals, Salt Lake defeated the Crew in Columbus on their way to winning the 2009 MLS Cup.

In the CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinals this year, Salt Lake demolished Columbus at Rio Tinto Stadium, 4-1.  Salt Lake made it all the way to the final before losing to Monterrey from Mexico.
