The Columbus Crew play the Portland Timbers Saturday night at the newly renovated Jeld-Wen Field (11:00 pm). The Crew are 3-2-4 on the season (13 points), and the Timbers are 4-3-2 (14 points). The game is the Crew’s first ever game against the expansion Timbers.
Columbus previously played last Saturday in San Jose, losing 3-0. The Timbers also played last Saturday against the Seattle Sounders in the first ever Cascadia Cup match up between the two teams. The game ended 1-1.
The Crew have only scored 8 goals in their last 9 games in this season. None of these goals have come in the first half, and only 4 of them are from the run of play.
The Timbers have played four home games this season. They have four home victories. They are the only remaining team in MLS with a perfect home record this season.
Two former Crew players, defender Eric Brunner and midfielder Adam Moffat, are on Portland’s roster. Brunner, a native of Dublin, Ohio, has started all nine of Portland’s games this season. Moffat has appeared in one game. Both players were selected by Portland in the 2010 MLS Expansion Draft. Timbers forward Bright Dike was selected by the Crew in the first round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft before being released by the team before the season started. He scored 10 goals last year in 23 games for the Timbers in the USSF Division 2 League . He also had a hat-trick in the U.S. Open Cup.
