The Columbus Crew and the Seattle Sounders played to a 1-1 draw on a wet and rainy Saturday night at Crew Stadium. The conditions played a huge part in the announced attendance of only 7,148.
Sounders forward Fredy Montero scored Seattle’s only goal in the 7th minute. Midfielder Erik Friberg sent in a cross from 35 yards out, and Montero slipped right between Crew defenders Chad Marshall and Julius James and flicked the ball into the net with a nice header.
Columbus earned a penalty in the 67th minute. Chad Marshall was taken down in the box while going up for a header on a corner kick. Emilio Renteria stepped up to take the shot, and he placed the ball into the right corner, beating Sounders goalie Kasey Keller.
The Crew continued to push on for a second, and game winning, goal. They outshout Seattle in the second half 13:1. Kasey Keller made five key saves to keep the game tied and earn an away point for Seattle.
With the tie, the Crew move to 3-1-4 and remain undefeated in their past seven games. They are also unbeaten in their previous eight home games, dating back to last season’s 4-0 loss to Seattle. Seattle is now 3-3-4 on the season. They have still never to lost Columbus.
Columbus will play next Saturday in San Jose against the Earthquakes. Seattle will play at home next Saturday against Portland on ESPN2 at 11 pm.
